Number of HİV infected persons registered in Azerbaijan reaches 3199
3086 persons of them are Azerbaijani citizens
Azerbaijani Health Ministry and Republic AIDS Center jointly held an event on December 1- World Aids Day.
Head of the center Haqiqat Orujova said that within 11 months the center registered new 476 HIV infected persons. 465 of them (97,7%) are Azerbaijani citizens, the rest (2,3 %) are foreigners.
Total number of HIV infected persons registered by the center by December 1, 2011 is 3199. Of these, 3086 ( 96,5%) are Azerbaijani citizens, 113 persons ( 3,5 %) are foreigners.
2525 (81,8%) out of 3086 Azerbaijani citizens are men, 56 (18, 2%) women.
According to Gadirova, 1940 ( 62.9%) of patients with AIDS in Azerbaijan are drug addicted; 283 (9.2%) of patients have been infected for unknown reasons; 40 (1.3%) are infected from their mothers; 1( 0.03%) from donors; 29 ( 0.9%) as a result of homosexual encounters; and 793 ( 25.7%) from heterosexual sex.
The virus is spread among high-risk groups of infected drug users
There are now 34 million people living with HIV. 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus, including an estimated 390,000 children. Despite a significant decline in the estimated number of AIDS-related deaths over the last five years, there were still an estimated 1.8 million AIDS-related deaths in 2010.
