20 January has been declared a National Day of Mourning
20 years passed after 20 January events which is a source of pride for every Azerbaijani. Different versions about reasons of the tragedy are sounded time to time. But there is only one point: In this historical day Azerbaijani people demonstrated their will to struggle and readiness for die for national freedom.
On that day more than 130 civilians were brutally killed, nearly 1000 people were injured. No doubt it was a tragedy for our people. At the same time the event entered our modern present history as a fight for pride and honor. Azerbaijani state and government officials, representative of diplomatic corpuses, and individuals will visit Alley of Martyrs and remember victims of the tragedy. The visit will begin at 11a.m.and finish at 7 p.m. According to the Action Plan on commemoration of 20th year of 20 January tragedy, approved by the order of Head of Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev, a series of events dedicated to the tragedy are held in the cities and regions of the republic, as well as in the offices and organizations. According to the action plan, in order to attract the world’s attention to the tragedy,corresponding measures are taken by foreign embassies in Azerbaijan, diplomatic corpuses, and Azerbaijani communities. In memory of victims, a minute of silence will be observed at 12 a.m. Baku time. Ships, motor cars and trains will give signals. Azerbaijan national flag will be lowered in sing of mourning . www.itv.az
